Pablo Picasso’s painting Les femmes d'Alger (Version 'O') was sold for $179,365,000, setting a new world auction record for any work of art ever sold at auction on 11 May 2015 in New York.

In the same year 2015, Amedeo Modiglianni's Nu couche sold for $170,405,000 and in 2013 ,Francis Bacon's Three studies of lucian Freud sold for $142,405,000. Compared to the  1990’s, the two lone records set prior to 1999 that still stand: Vincent van Gogh’s Portrait of Dr. Gachet (1890) and Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s Au moulin de la Galette (1876). The pair sold in one week in 1990 for $82.5 million and $78.1 million , the price increased 117%. The returns on the investment is astounding.

Art, at this very tip-top of the market is in some sense the ultimate luxury good. And to the extent that it is an asset for family legacy.  Buyers are generally most willing to purchase when the money is cheap ROI is high. Thus, we see more still during the housing bubble of the last decade. By far the highest prices ever achieved took place from 2012 to 2015. Experts predicted the trend would not end soon in the near future.

Art collection and auction appears a story of shifts in business strategy, the extremely increasing flow of art’s role as an alternative asset class, the encounter of new economic superpowers, and the changing of taste.

Here are some useful statistics for your reference:
